Default 2005 V6 Engine Swap for 2011 V6

Given the price of fuel these days and getting more performance at the same time, I'm tossing around the idea of changing out my 05 V6 for a 2011/12 V6 that gets far better gas mileage. My questions are, what kind of adaptabilty is there? And what else would I be looking at replacing to make it all work?

No idea what it would take or if it's ever been done or attempted. It would definitely cost far more money than it would be worth for the extra mpg/power. I would just supercharge your 05 and put supporting mods on and you'll have plenty of power but not the added MPG

It's not just the enigne that delivers the improved mpg, it's the 6 speed.

That over drive gear generates 31mpg highway, a 5 (or 4) speed would get slightly less...

New Trani, fully dressed 3.7 and new ECU is probably about it. Any you'll want to upgrade to dual exhaust while your at it, if you havn't already done so.

I think it would be cheaper to just get the 2011, seems like the swap would be alot of work, and without a whole donor car the little parts you need would drive you crazy

I have the duel exhaust, but I think over the next 6 months I should be able to find a totaled unit for the parts I need

Ford tells me the motor mount frame brackets arer in the same place as other V6 units. I have the duel exhaust already but I'm with you. A tranny & motor with all the trimmings should do it. I think in 6 months I should be able to find a parts vehicle, especially with all the cars that got hit with hail, tornados, and flooding in the south.

So you wanna do an engine swap in order to get better gas mileage?
Smart move there, I totally approve...
Let us know how long it will take to swallow the cost of the swap in gas savings.

I say you'll spend anywhere from $5 to $10K depending how much you pay for the 3.7 with tranny with all the electronics hook ups etc... and how much work you'll be doing yourself if any.

It seems that the best way to combine gas mileage and more performance with your current car, would be installing a blower and a 6 speed.

Also, this thread belongs in the S197 V6 tech section and you'll get more help there.
Good luck to you Sir.

Just some quick math

if you drive 15k miles a year, and lets just say with the 11 v6 drivetrain you get an average of 27mpg (which is very high), you would spend about $2200 in gas, at $4/gal.
Even if you were previously getting 20mpg, you would be spending $3000 in gas for the same distance traveled. Yes that $800 difference is a lot of money, but if you spent $10k on the swap, it will take you well over 10 years to see any type of savings.

So......have fun.

I don't know that I would ever do this type of a project with the idea that you'll make money saving gas in the long run. It'll never happen for most typical drivers. I do however think the the whole idea of swapping a 3.7 into the 2005-2009 model would be a worthwhile consideration if you have a trusted shop to do the work or you're able to do it yourself. Especially if you already have a late model v6. Let's say you could do it for $5k. You could easily find an adult driven 2005 model that is relatively low on miles and unmolested for $9k if you look hard enough. That would be a sweet setup for $14k.

Also isn't the 2005-2009 100 lbs less on weight plus you save pulling the iron block 4.0. You could be 150-200 lbs less on weight.

I wonder how it would do against an 05 - 09 GT.
