Now I totally agree with you as I have a 2012 pony package equipped car. and if I choose the 2.73 gear option on my tuner the speedo reads fast but if I choose stock or 3.31 option the speedo is correct.
2011 and 2012 brochures which can be viewed online. If you go to the page where they start advertising the standard features on each trim level it says 3.31 for the premium.

Canadian car packages are traditionally a bit more generous on canadian markets. Example a base 2012 accent in the states doesnt have a radio from what i hear in reviews but is meant as a low priced unit that will attract buyers to showrooms but never be bought. Our base models come with the radio. I remember seeing otger examples but i forget

I WISH premiums came with 3.31s.

Not so....I have a new 2012 base mustang with the 3.31 gear option. The only other options I have are auto trans and sport apearance package with tape stripe delete.

I got a base premium with 3.31 gears. It was my only option since there were no premium package cars with the performance package available when I bought mine. I figured why pay extra if I'm going to modify it anyway and purchased it.

When I went to buy they told me the only way to get 3.31s was with the performance pack and that only came on Premium models? As it was there were not very MTs available.

I have been wrestling with re-gearing a lot, I saw a smoken deal on some take off gears, add to that that I have a good friend who is a Ford Mechanic who has re-geared hundreds of 8.8s and wont charge me for labor,,, it is mighty temping.

I am not sure if I want to give up the gas mileage, even though it is minimal, heck since I spend a fair amount of time cruising in 6th on the fwy who knows if I will even notice a difference in mpg?

In the end I ask my friend if he recommend the re-gear and he said 'No'. I have not yet asked him why.

Well fun fact. EPA wise the manual mustang with the 2.73 gears gets 29mpg.

EDIT: I personally recommend the 3.31 gears. I dunno about drag or circuit racing. But for the street, I find the 3.31 differential gear mated to the MT82 provides the car with gearing thats perfect for the powerband and the engines characteristics. It just feels right. If only my MT82 wasn't such a whining grinding POS. Looking forward to the NHTSA results.

I have manual 3.31 and on Canada day I did a treck to quebec city with my ex-gf(gf at the time). With probably 550lbs of people(I'm 250 fairly built but a bit overweight, she was heavier, BBW for the win :P.. and yes ive had skinny so I can compare) plus our luggage for the weekend. Top that off with a knocking 87 octane street tune(The 91 street tune works perfectly FYI. I'm happy) with air-raid CAI. I had the AC blasted, yes it gets that hot in Canada, and was driving an average of 75mph without cruise control as I was following my parents in the old man's pickup and he couldn't keep a steady speed if his life depended on it.

I got 29.22mpg going there over a distance of 249 miles. All highway of course. I wouldn't worry too much about fuel economy losses going to 3.31

The factory sticker on my car with 3.31 gears also said 29mpg highway. I thought 2.73 was rated for 31.

ThE 2.73 with auto tranny were rated at 31mpg. The same gears with manual are 29mpg. So 2.73 auto is the most fuel efficient combination while 3.31 manual i supposed to be the worst.

Weird. I can get 31mpg fairly easily, so the 2.73 gears should probably get 33-34mpg despite Ford's reported numbers.
