Why Is My Car Saying 29 Miles Until Empty With 2.5 Gallons Left?
So on my way back from Tuscaloosa the computer sounds the alarm and tells me 50 miles until empty. I'm getting 27 mpg going 80-85 mph, and with the warning saying 29 miles till empty, I buy gas and it only takes 13.5 gallons to fill up. Is that remaining 2.6 gallons accessible?
So I've actually got around 67 miles until empty, or does the computer just live very conservatively?

The reserve doesn't count.
If you run the tank bone dry, you run the chance of killing your fuel pump. The pump is cooled by the fuel. Without the fuel to keep it cool at operating temps, it will fry.
Then there is the pain of having to prime the system. If you run all the fuel out, there is no fuel in the pump, which will need to prime, no fuel in the lines, which will need to be filled so that the empty injectors can be primed too.
I sealed pressurized fuel system is not a joke.
Don't play with those last two gallons, just put the fuel in when it tells you it is thirsty.

Thanks. I just wish I wasn't running to the gas station every 260 to 360 miles. Here's hoping for some improved range with the redesign of the mustang.

Forget the "Miles to Empty" The car comes with a fuel gauge. Fill-up before you get to 1/4 tank.
The onboard averages your fuel mileage since the last reset. It's not terribly accurate to begin with. Use the gauge.

Every car I've owned is like that. I'm 72 and have owned over 20 cars/trucks. They want you to fill up before is says "Empty". If you wait till it says empty and it really is empty you may be 20 miles from the nearest station.
