Thanks to all who responded with suggestions. After the black box was installed last Friday, on Monday and Tuesday of this week, it stalled out 4 times within a 12 hour period, twice on the way to the dealership (I had to turn around). (I did not pull the fuse as one person responded because on the way home to try that out, the car stalled again and I didn't want to mess up the black box that had been installed). I had to call Ford Roadside Assistance to tow it from my house (they did not charge). Dealership finally identified the issue as a bad Throttle Body and it was replaced (they had to search all over Orange County and LA County to find one). Since picking it up yesterday, I now get 24.2 mpg. The most I ever got since buying the vehicle was 19.2mpg. Mostly, I was getting about 16.5 to 17.5 (I drive mostly surface streets so I thought that was why my mileage was so bad, as Consumer Reports showed the mileage to be 30 mpg). I brought my car into the dealership a few months after I bought it in 2011 complaining that there was a lag time between putting on the gas and actual pick up but they said they couldn't find anythign wrong. Thinking about it now and in combination with the vastly improved gas mileage between one day and the previous year and a half, I wonder if this problem existed from the very beginning. So, for now, it seems to be running OK. Thanks again to all who responded and I hope my experience helps others.
