My own opinion is, K&N filters are probably fine for racing engines-engines that get torn down after several races. I have used them over the years in bikes and more that a few cars. I have never noticed any performance or mileage improvement.
I have read test data that said they do flow better, but they don't filter as well as a paper filter. For a car that is driving for the long haul, I'd stay with a paper filter.
The only filter I have ever seen that is better is the Eaa filters sold by Amsoil. No oil to mess with, high flowing and better filtering. You just clean them every 25K miles and replace at 100K miles.
And speaking of oil, a lot of people get too much oil on their K&N filters and end up getting it all over the MAF sensor and causing all kinds of problems. My son did this.
People don't read the K&N instructions and clean them way too often and over oil them. K&N says to clean & re-oil at 100K miles. K&N's actually work better when they'r dirty.
I'd be more likely to use them in an older car with a carburetor.

I put in the standard K&N panel filter as with all my wheeled vehicles. Never
been disappointed in any way. Durable and dependable. I always felt I was
getting more power and mpg regardless of 2 or 4 wheels.

I wouldn't let a K&N filter within 10 ft. of any car I cared about....

I have a new K&N for a 2012 3.7 still in the box. A Wix paper filter has three times the filter area and does a better job of filtering.
