Even with the 3.73 gears I only noticed a slight decrease from the stock 19-20MPG in the city and the economy meter was showing 17.4 this morning just a few days after a fill-up. With the 93R tune and 3.73's it seems to take less effort to achieve the same speed as before I would have to wind out 1st and 2nd with the stock tune and 2.73 gears so I found myself on the gas more. Now it feel like it just goes without much effort at all. And like Choopertwo stated, If I start to have too much fun my MPG nanny starts to dip quickly which usually brings me right back to reality.

I have not tested it for highway mileage since I did everything but a short interstate run where I reset the MPG meter when I hit the on ramp showed that I was getting better than 28 or so at 75 and that dropped to around 25 when I stepped up to 80-85 range but 6th gear is much more usable now and I can pass effortlessly without the dramatic downshift and hard throttle the old gear needed. I was prepared for the worst but I have been pleasantly surprised with the tune as well as my choice of gears as it now feels more like a proper Mustang.

I want to do 3.73s pretty badly, however it seems to be a 600-700$ labor job, everywhere I call. Plus 300 for parts. So, I need to save -.-

nice write up, I want gears, but thats down the line a bit, 355's or 373's for sure, gas miliage really isn't priority with me, don't get me wrong, it's nice, but the pull is what i'm aiming for

It is a costly mod for sure but the feel of the car and personality change is well worth it. I am an experienced technician and have done 20 or 30 gear jobs while working in a Ford performance shop. I purchased the bundle from American Muscle that included the tuner, gears and install kit that came with the fluids, shims, bearings, nut and crush sleeve for $620 and my father and I did it on a Saturday. Its definitely worth getting them installed by a professional as getting the setup wrong can leave you stranded on the side of the road with a costly tow and repair bill.

I debated between 3.73 and 3.55s but in my experience and from the forums most that had 3.55s wanted more, especially in a manual car. I compared the rpm difference at speed charts and there was only about 200rpm difference so I went for the 3.73s. Many of my customers with the old Fox, SN95 and New edge cars with automatics that wanted to really wake up existing mods went for 4.10s. I made one 4.6 customer almost pee his pants on the test drive after coming in disappointed in how slow the car was even after all of the other mods he had done. He came back a few days later beaming that he was able to beat his buddies 5.0 stick car and finally shut him up about his slow Mustang.

Mine does have a little of the dreaded whine that most people report from 3.73 gears but some of that is due to the BMR upper control arm that transmits some of the noise into the cabin. I'm going to add some Dynamat to the tunnel under the rear seat above the mount and see if that reduces it some. Being the OCD/perfectionist that I am, I will probably go back into it and set the backlash again since they have been broken in and I will update on the noise situation. I love my 3.73s and I am happy every time I take off from a redlight!

Thanks!

I am tech specialist and software instructor as well as doing tech articles for my job and I have learned so much from others on forums that I like to try and give back. I have an office job now but made a living for quite a few years as an automotive technician and built Mustangs from installing bolt-ons for daily drivers to full race car builds and I spend much of my free time laying under cars, both my own and helping friends, and I am always willing to help someone with a fix or just an upgrade. Feel free to PM me anytime, if I don't know something I will research it until I have enough info to give an informed opinion.

Have a great weekend!

Epona.. I just got the Bama tuner myself with the JLT CAI and you will love the difference. I went straight to the 93R tune after reading most of the reviews and really like the race tune.
