The sportsman was not an engine option from motorsports. It was a block. that they used with some crate engines after they ran out of regular production blocks. The only cars ever offered with this specific block were some 99 Saleen S-351's. For a few months Motorsports offered a thing they called a sportsman block but, it was nothing more than a stock block. Then they changed back to the beefier block. Now, they do I believe offer a motor for the round track guys that is sealed. This is for specific class racing.

stock 351W block is good for 700hp
how much power did you have in mind?

If you want 1000hp you need a Dart block anyway.

at first I wanted a 427 stroker kit but somebody told me that a 408 would last longer and be fast enough

any stock 351 block will do what you want and last forever if
put together properly.

yeah stick with 408 it will last longer and make a solid 550hp (flywheel)
with right parts.
