where to start?
I bought a 95 351w about a year ago and im going to start to dissassemble it soon. Im going carb with it and want to stroke it but im not sure if i want to go 393 or 408. Does anyone know how much the block work would cost at a machine shop? ill probably try to sell some of the top end parts to get a little money to help pay for new parts. so where should i start?

RE: where to start?
Start by finding a good local "race engine" shop to build it for you.
408W
Probably run about $2,000 for just the short block.
Another $3-4,000 for heads, cam and all the other little stuff.
Another $1,000 for intake, carb
Some 225cc heads on a 10.5 to 11-1 408W with custom cam would kick
some serious butt

RE: where to start?
The only place i had to notch my block was near the oil pump, MUCH easier then if ya try to stroke a chevy. I have a 408 and I can't imagine that the 393 rod ratio is that much different that you wouldn't have to notch the bock for it. My 408 was damn close to the block and I had to take a fair ammount off to get the .020" clearance thats my engine builder recomended.
r.barn's prices are pretty accurate.. ya need money to make power there is no way around it. I dropped 1k on my carb alone and the " other little stuff" can knock ya over 4k if ya go for areal nasty setup
