rpm on 351
hey guys im wondering if i keep the stock rods and crank with new forged pistons (357) what would be safe to spin the motor too. say if i got the right springs and lifters and pushrods and arp hardware..i want to convert it to a roller. but is that the best for higher rpm. i would like to spin it around 6500-7000 if possible..and i havent orderd any parts yet so im very open to ideas. wat do you think the stock rods and crank will spin to safely to? thanks

RE: rpm on 351
I wouldn't spin it past 6500 with stock rods. Now you can if you run a light pistons..ie..custom and have everything balanced. Unfortunately stock rods don't like high rpms. The crank will be fine. Atleast upgrade to an h-beam rod (Do not waste your money on CAT or the chinese junk). I-beam rods aren't much better than a stock rodand won't take alot of rpms unless you buy ones from oliver, carrillo, or grp. If they don't list the manu. of the rods then they are probably chinese. Ebay is full of them right now.

I dont spin mine faster than 6500. As stated above you should replace the rods. The stock crank's are a strong piece and will be fine. Forged I-beams from a good company can be plenty strong and lighter also. The combination of engine especially the valve train is going to determine how fast you can spin engine and still gain power. What is your combo now? Or have you started it yet?

RE: rpm on 351
i got my windsor set up with solid roller cam and tough valve train with H beam rods and steel crank all balanced. I don't know where it would fly apart but I will never take it past 7200 which is where my cam runs out of steam. Stock rods and crank 6200-6300 is where I would draw the line for any kind of reliability.

my car goes thru the traps between 6900 and 7000on nitrous depending on how good the pass is , mybottom end ( 351 ) is stock and my motor is 30 over with a set of forged pistons, the motor is 3 seasons old and i haven't had a problem
