Transmission swap question

Im actually planning on doing a 460 swap into my 83 vert but I figured the 351 guys could help me out. Most people who run a 460 swap the T5 for a C6 but I really want to keep a manual transmission and the T5 I know won't last me long. I also don’t have the pocket book to go out and get a $2000 aftermarket trans. I found an 86 3/4 ton ford truck with a 460 and 4 speed manual. I don’t know what model the trans is. Does anyone know if that trans out of the truck will fit. I don’t mind getting a shorter drive shaft or minor crossmember fab. Any words of wisdom?
Thanks,
Nick

it is prolly either a T18 or T19 tranny, and you gears wouldnt be great and if im not mistaken im not sure how the transfer case would work out when you just eliminate it...

best bet is looking for a toploader, 4 speed came in almost all manual big blocks in the 60's and 70's.

Minor fab work isnt going to cut it either way i think, but i could be wrong

when you say the gears wouldn't be good, you mean gear ratios? Because I have a 3.08 in the rear dif and I was planning on changing it anyway.....maybe that would compensate?? if thats what you meant. And I it isn't a 4X4 truck so the transfer case shouldn't be an issue. Ill look into the toploader. I forgot about that....

But if this trans would work, I might just pick it up because hes asking for an extra hundred bucks for it with the engine and since it was originally paired with the 460, it has to be tougher than the T5.
I really appreciate the input.
Thanks

o well if it wasnt a 4x4 i might be wrong on the trannies but yea, in that case, make it work, shifter location may be a Problem

yeah, I dont know where I could find out if it would fit. I tried to google the model of the truck to see what model the trans is but I couldnt find it.

If the shifter placement is right, Im sure I could make it work but I dont know. Maybe Ill bring my T5 with me and line the two up. Ive just never heard of someone using a manual in a 460 besides an aftermarket trans.

Also, If I did go the top loader route, Is that pretty much a plug and play deal? Im just curious how the clutch (using the same cable ass.) and everything matches up. Anyone ever used a toploader in a fox?

I didn't own the car but I built the car and did a 460/top loader combo. Not only will you have cut the trans tunnel to bring the shifter out but you will have to be creative making the shift handle. I could write up on the problems with this car for weeks and I told the guy up front that he would be better buying a TKO600 but he wasn't having it. I would never take on that mess again. If you are going 460 I'd throw in a good C6 and be done with it. There isn't anything plug and play about a top loader/460 combo in a Fox.
