Default Why is our Y-Pipe so bad??

THe one on the left is of the 99-04 v6, and the one on the right is ours. Why is our y-pipe so badly designed, the old one is really close to an x-pipe

Guess you'd have to ask ford why they do what they do...

For some reason I'm thinking they just weren't thinking of the modding community when they designed the car. If you plan on having stock single exhaust it works just fine.

Seems it's more cost efficient. Instead of having 2 tubes going into that beefier bracket. Just slant cut and weld.

Now to us, it might be only a $10 cost cutting procedure. Hardly seeming worth it. But to Ford... that could be $10 per vehicle. Multiply that by how many vehicles they make.

Gotta admit. The Mustang does pack a punch but it is also pretty easy on the wallet. Compared to what it could be.

actually I dont think the Y-pipe is all that bad... going to a dual setup and ditching the Y has shown only a couple of HP gain... So when you figure the extra cost of going to duals, I really don't think it's worth it for 2 or 3 RWHP... The bottle neck is most likey the cats...

Now if you did want to go to duals you could always pick up the drivers side MRT! LOL! Probably would want to put a couple resonators in with them though as people who have tried dual MRT really didn't like it...

Wonder if the 2hp gain could be negated by the added weight of the added pipes?

I'd sooner find out how efficient of flow the current Y pipe is, and if just replacing that with a single exhaust would be beneficial enough.

That and taking out the cats completely to increase flow, just make sure to put those back in anytime you wish to go for emissions test. Ooooh ninja text, I can not be held liable now! Whaaaaa!

Since replacing the pipe and going true duals only shows a few rwhp difference from an axleback on the stock Y pipe, i'd say the pipes actually flow very well for stock ones. Our mufflers are the restrictive part...and i'm sure the cats, i'd be very interested to see before/after dynos when someone does long tube headers on the 4.0.

Define bad. I dyno'd the difference NA between a Y and X, and the gain was 2HP which on a Dynojet, can be attributed to anything.
