@ Rygen. You don't think it could be caused by the inherent weakness of the head gasket do you? There was a report out from some outfit that did a technical analysis of the 4.0L V6 that stated the head gasket area could produce problems in a FI (forced induction) application because the water jacket and head bolts were so numerous that the head gasket's integrity was compromised to some extent.

Sorry to hear that. I hope it is only a head gasket, and nothing worse. May the karma gods smile on you!!

RE: IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR FI OWNERS
Bump in the hopes of an update, and also some thoughts. I don't think that a loss of octane, or even an increase in cylinder temperature due to a lean condition would kill the head gasket. Usually, gaskets fail due to excessive heat causing warping of the head, or increased cylinder pressure, due to the forced induction. This is why FI cars run thinner head gaskets or lower compression. I know our 4.0s have slightly higher compression than is desired for FI applications, but this can be offset by running lower boost pressures. Octane basically refers to the tendency of a fuel to self ignite, with lower octane numbers being more prone to ignition due to compression and thus not desirable for FI. The result is pre-detonation, with the resultant knocking, not overheating and burning of pistons, though mechanical damage to the pistons or rods can result from detonation. The white smoke is obviously head gasket failure between the cylinders and water jackets, and a radiator leak down test or compression test should reveal that.

That's truly a tragedy, and the octane theory makes sense. At the shop I used to work at, we sold GumOut fuel injection cleaner that always made the Cadillacs rumble suspiciously. I hope everything works out and you get up and running soon.
