niosy transmission

Hi guys/gals,
need some advise here: my newly bought '07 v6 manual transmission makes weird clinking noises, particularly when engaging the clutch on 1st and 2nd gears, feels almost like something is loose at the engine' end of the driveshaft. Another issue - when releasing the clutch in neutral, I heara low grinding noise (non-lubricatedbearing?). When the clutch is engaged (pedal down) the sound disappears.
I had the car for a little over one week nowand haven't noticed it at first. Took it backto the dealer who sold it, they test-drove it and said it is normal :-((.
Does anybody have similar problems here?
My paranoia is growing and I am starting to feel the buyer's remorse.
Thx

our mustangs have noisy transmissions.. my advice would be to insulate the shifter housing to quiet it down a bit. if your trans goes, it's covered by warranty, so don't worry about it

My transmission is very noisy as well, and it makes a grinding noise in 4th gear at low RPMs. 2007. 2500 miles.

I dont know about the auto tranny's but the manual ones make alot of noise. From what I understand it is all related to the driveshaft. As alot of us know, the v6 driveshaft is crap, there are several threads documenting this. A few have even failed at high speed.

you can pick up a good aftermarket DS for about $600. I know of a good deal on the Powerhouse Driveshaft. PM me if you are interested.

RE: niosy transmission

Other than reliability, is there any performance gain from switching to an aftermarket DS?

Everyone will tell you these are our transmissions...they are known for being noisy!

Some things that may solve it:

-New shifter (Hurst or Steeda).
-New driveshaft (Dennys)
-Turn up your music ;)

Yes, stock driveshaft weighs something like 45 pounds... You could get a 3in light weight shaft that would be at least half the weight.

My car does the same exact thing

Mine also from day one. Ford does say it is normal. There is a fix, replace tranny fluid with Royal Purple synchromax. Cost about 30bux. It will cut noise way down with smoother shifts...

people report a 1-2mpg gain when they switch to an aluminum driveshaft... the less mass you have to spin, the easier it is for the engine to transfer power to the wheels.. you don't make more power, you just lose less.. it's like swapping in a lightweight flywheel.. less mass to put into motion

BillyBix,
Did you replace the tranny fluid yourself?
If so, do you have any info on how to do this?
Thanks

RE: niosy transmission

Yep. easy to do, ....with the right tool!. Get a good Trans fluid fill tool, (you will get what you pay for!) either a pump type or syringe type that includes at least 8" of 1/4 clear tubing on each end of the pump type or for the syringe type enought to get to the bottom of the bottle and be able to reach the top hole. Jack up the front of the car and set on jack stands. Located on pass side of the tranny about 3/4 of the way back there will be two round hex caps one near the top and one close to the bottom. There are other posts here somewhere with pics. Open up the top cap first with hex wrench, stick a clean finger into the hole to check the stock fluid level so you know where "full" is. You will also be measuring the amount that goes in to stock fluid level specs, but it doesnt hurt to have a double check method. Then open up the bottom cap drain old fluid into pan. put bottom cap back in. prime pump or fill syringe with new fluid, place and of discharge tube in to the top open hole (tight fit... right next to pass side o/2 sensor!) and pump in required amount (3.2 pints or so). It will be "full" when the fluid is at the same level as when you stuck your finger in and checked earlier and total used matches spec range for "capacity" of T-5 tranny. replace top cap tighten with hex wrench to same position as before you started. Lower car from ramp or jack stands. fire it up and test it out.

Thanks for the info BillyBix.
How much quieter was the transmission after you did this?

Not to bring back a super old thread but my car is doing the same. Noise when clutch is NOT depressed and car is idling in neutral, push clutch in and the "whirring" noise (throwout bearing i assume) goes away. Also I have the low rpm noise when engaging the clutch on 1st and 2nd. Anyone get a fix for this or is this still considered "normal".

I made an appointment at Ford to have it checked. I have an 07 5-speed man with 1000 miles on it. thanks for any replies

i got a 07 v6 5 speed, and i have the same kind of noises that you have laserred. i think maybe our trannies are just inherently noisy?

My transmission is very noisy as well, and it makes a grinding noise in 4th gear at low RPMs. 2007. 2500 miles.
That is because yourengine is straining. Downshift is all that is needed here. Its like trying to pull out in 3rd instead of 1st.

I have been using the reccomended shift points from Ford for gas milage, and I run into the same problem.

It's definitly not lugging.

exactly it is not lugging, even if i shift to soon and it lugs as soon as it stops lugging you hear the noise I am and I believe the above poster is talking about. now if htis is normal I will live with it since I rarely don't have my radio on, so I really don't mind, however if this is indicative of a problem then I want to know what the solution is. Ford seems to say it is normal, anyone else?

RE: niosy transmission

I had the same trouble with my 07 manual. It annoyed the heck out of me and I had it back to the dealer many times for it. The Ford factory rep called it normal and would not authorize any rebuilds, repairs or new transmissions. I finally traded the POS in for a GT with a special deal from my dealer. They knew I was unhappy and wanted to keep my business. Some of these V6 transmissions are noisier than others but they all have some noise. Ford does have a newflange availablethat the dealer can install at the rear of the trans where the driveshaft attaches. This new flange has a dampener that will take up some of the driveline slop and eliminate some of the clunking but not all of it. Ask your dealer service manager about it. I will post the part# tomorrow as all my paperwork is at the office.

RE: niosy transmission

As far as the whirring noise, thats the normal factory sound the t-5 makes when clutch in engaged in neutral and the gears are spinning. It is not bearing noise. There is not a lot of sound insulation between the transmission and cabin. That is the only "defect' involved ...lack of insulation. RP syncromax transmission fluid change will quiet it down considerably.

As far as rpm ranges to shift, you should learn your cars needs and look at Ford's "recommended shift ranges" as novice reading material only. Shift up and down when the load/engine/weight and road conditions warrant it to run in its best torque and power bands. After a while you will learn where the car runs best. I get 27 mpg in town, and a high on the highway of 32.3 mpg. I never push or lug the engine below 1500 rpm or run in 4th below 35 mph, 5th below 45 (with stock 3.31 gears) and never run over 3500 when shifting "normally" in daily driving. Its a feel thing.....not a meet the specs or tech manual ranges thing...

RE: niosy transmission

Hey VinFord07Pony, do you have the parts number of that flange you described?

I'm having the same experiences with my manual gearbox that everyone else in this thread describes. Had it checked out by the dealer, did 2 testdrives in other V6 manuals, they all seem to have these noises so I guess it's normal for our cars (not necessarily normal for Ford to not do a better job at noise insulation though). It's especially noticeable driving around town (Washington DC, many stop signs so lots of 1-2 shifts).

RP trans fluid (did anyone else try a different fluid perhaps) and possibly some dynamat around the gearshift area are on my 'to do' list.

Cheers,
DutchPony

Hi, I just got here and would really like to know what the part number is for the flange. I live in a small town and the local dealer needs all the help I can give. Thanks for your help

Add us to the list...V6 -5spd Pony Package convertible...drowns out the satelite radio in 1st and 2nd especially...Ford says it was beefed up from our previous 2000 V6-5spd as wanna be GT buyers drove them hard but bought them for reduced insurance costs vs GT. Plausible..I guess. Car is great in every way but this!
