PCM, ECU, ECT, Clarification?
I was wondering about some of the different abbreviations that are used when talking about the computers on our cars. Namely PCM, ECU and ECT. Is there someone that could give me an explanation of these terms? I believe that the PCM is the computer box that is attached to the side of the fuse box, is that correct? I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks

RE: PCM, ECU, ECT, Clarification?
ecu and pcm are generally the same on cars
although some have mutliple computers
ecu is engine control unit
pcm is powertrain control module
ect is usually referring to the engine coolant temperature though, dunno where that came from lol

Ford tends to use ECU as a generic term that refers to any control module (ElectronicControl Unit). PCM is Powertrain Control Module. All modules have their own acronym. REM, TCM, ABS, DDM, BSM, SJB, LCM, et cetera. ECT is typically for coolant temp, but your vehicle uses a CHT (cylinder headtemperature) sensor. ECT would then be inferred, or calculated. ETC is howFord refers to Electronic Throttle Control.
