I know that there is a break in period with a new gear set, but if I had a new set installed then the mechanic pulled out metal shavings I would be real concerned. After break in period the proper method is to check gear lash and bearing pre load to see if they seated any. If he is pulling out shavings after break in period you already have gears/and or bearings going down my friend.

im sorry but the only time a gear will have shavings is if the bearings are set off specs. If your gears are shaving metal when he checks the mech screwed up your gears and they will have a wear pattern making them whine all the time. I should know I am ASE certified for these kind of things lol
