Default Which gear is better for our cars?

Along with a CAI, tune, and exhaust, I'm thinking about putting gears in. I know a lot of GTs use 4.10s but other people have recommended 3.73s I don't care about top end speed, but I care about how quickly off the line I can get as well as 0-60s.

So which is better, 3.73s or 4.10s for a V6 with soon a CAI, exhaust and tune?

Depending how I like them, I'll probably go with 91 performance tune or 87 performance, if that makes a difference.

4.10's are gonna be a little better then the 3.73's but as far as driveability the 3.73's are gonna be better. If I were you I would get the 3.73 gear.

With that being said, then I would suggest getting 4.10:1 gears. I have 4.10's in my PP coupe (4.0L/5spd), and I get better gas mileage than my wife's stock 2005 vert (4.0L/auto). The nice thing about the 4.10's is the improved pull the car has through the gears. I can motor through light accelleration rather than downshifting.

I'm not convinced that 4.10's are the best gear choice for the track. With 28" dia DR's, I still have the shift into 4th before the traps. I would rather be in 3rd and avoid the downtime of the 3-4 shift, or have 4.30's and take advantage of the powerband in 4th gear. However, Boss 244 used 4.10's for his 13.8 and 13.9 runs, so there is something to be said for thier use at the track.

All that considered, how about for a DD?

I logged 16K miles in 2007; mostly with the 4.10's. In December I drove from DE to NC which was about 900 miles at roughly 72mph, and I averaged 25.5mpg. Don't fear 4.10's...

Well all things considered, I get 19MPG City and Freeway combined (considerably more freeway) if I'm lucky with the stock gearing. I don't even WOT it anymore and I still get that. MPG isn't SO MUCH a consideration, but what I'm more interested is getting off the line and down the lanes faster than the ricer next to me.

Also, are 4.10s good for when you gotta pass a truck to make an exit, at say, going 55 to 65-70 quickly, or will my top end suffer dramatically?

any car with an overdrive has no problem with drivablity with 4.10s, hell in my old camaro i had 3.73s and ended up buyin and inch shorter tires cause i wanted 4.10s[8D]

and throught the traps...you want to cross the line in between your peak horsepower and torque mark in your 1:1 gear (4th)

Do not fear 4.10's. I have them in my automatic 4.0 and love them. Its my daily driver and the mpg's arent to far off from where it was with the stock gears. I would recommend getting a TLOK with them also. I have the TLOK 4.10's, C & L intake, and at B A MArace tune....and it really woke up my 4.10. You wont regret it.

I'm basically going with what you have:

4.10s, TLOK, C&L, Tune from Bama, and dual exhaust (GT Takeoffs full conversion.)

How much RWHP does that add?
