Race fuel or pump gas

at the track they sell race fuel.... 106 octane is the highest unleaded
should i use it even though i dont have a specific "race tune"
i run 93 octane VPower from Shell...

so i guess i am asking for suggestions and do's and don'ts when it comes to fuel for the drag strip (Englishtown Raceway, NJ)

any suggestions or warninga are greatly appreciated

If your gonna run 106 get a tune for it, otherwise dont waste your money. You can run higher if you have no cats. Honestly just run 93 thats already better than us in cali.

if your car is not setup for 106 octane dont bother it can actually hurt your cars perfomance because its harder to completly burn a higher octane

It would be a waste of money to run 106 octane gas with a 93 tune. But with a 106 tune I could imagine "WOW". Would be something.

Actually, if you don't have any kind of a race tune, the 93 octane is aa waste of money. These cars are set up to run on lower octane. Like someone already said, if it's not programmed for higher octane, it will actually slow you down somewhat. I would think that 90 octane should be plenty.

leaded gas hurst the cats and o2 sensors, not the higher octane... but actually the highest unleaded fuel i've seen is usually 100 or 101... 106 is usually leaded...

couple of comments...

You don't necessarily need a tune to take advantage of a higher octance gas. The cars computer will actually try to advance the timing to take advantage of higher octane gas. You can actually see this if you datalog. The knock sensor will take away timing if they detect pinging, but they will also ADD timing if they think the car is under timed. One of the magazine actually tested this out with a GT. They actually measured 5 RWHP buy using premium (don't remember the specifics of the octane). So, saying you see no advantage by running premium gas unless you are tuned for it is not true... now is a few HP worth the extra $$$ at the pump??? that's up to you decide.

I don't think a tune for 106 on a NA car is really going to get you much in the way of HP, unless you are running some high CR pistons.... or if you are F/I... I don't think the price of 106 is going to be worth it...

Yeah that is why i said you can run higher without cats, I know its leaded....

and generally the cars computer can compensate for 100 octane race fuel, but not to the full advantage. Probably not even 25% of the gain would be there.
