If you're smelling burning clutch, take it back to the dealer that installed it and have them check it out.
Drop it in fourth and dump the clutch standing still.
If the engine stops, the clutch is grabbing. If the engine
just slows down while you stand still, the clutch is slipping.
I do a lot of stop and go driving because I'm coming home right in the middle of rush hour. As far as riding the clutch, no never I got my hands slapped pretty hard by my dad when he was training me about that. Most times my rpms are between 2.5 and 3.5 when taking off from a stop depending on incline and such. and I always hold in the clutch when stopped.
Stop and go driving is rather hard on a clutch, BUT 2.5-3.5k rpm average when taking off is extremely hard on your clutch... unless you're trying to take off very quickly you really should have the pedal all the way out in the 1200-1600 rpm range. Additionally, if you are not moving for more than 5-10 seconds or so you really should put it in neutral and let the clutch out... holding the pedal in at a stop will wear your clutch and throw out bearing.
