Even if it turns out to be dimensionally the same I'm pretty sure its safe to assume the Explorer doesn't use the 3 Link suspension set up that the S197's do.

Appreciate the response. It is too bad because this rear end has 3.73 gears with t lok.

Is there any other Ford car that I could pull an 8.8 from for the mustang? I have read about using 2 ford ranger passenger side axles.

It isn't the axles that is the issue, they are simply inside the axle tubes and could be any number of different set ups depending upon the differential used (tlok 31 spline, or the torsen 33 spline or there is one that is 35 spline for example). And you couldn't use the axles from the same side of a different vehicle anyway - the axles are different lengths because of the distance from the outside where the wheel is mounted to the differential clip.

The axle assembly uses a three link mount - one upper control arm from the center to the bottom of the car, and two lower control arms from the axle tubes to the bottom chassis mounting point. That's why you can't use a rear end from a different model since they use 4 link systems.

That's for Fox body guys who already have an 8.8 but want to convert to a 5 lug set up from the stock 4 lug axle. The Ranger used an 8.8 with a 5 lug axle but the diff was offset to one side so only the right side is the correct length for the Fox Mustang's equal length axles.
