Default Speedometer and Fuel Guage inaccurate

Hello all,

While driving my car I have noticed on several occasions that my speedometer and fuel guage have both been giving me inaccurate readings. The speedometer gives slower and faster readings sometimes and the fuel guage will say the car is empty or on 1/4 full when I know it has gas in it.

Another issue my wife tells me about is when it's cold out the car kinda "chuggs" even after driving for a while. Any ideas?

So how would I go about fixing these issues and approx. how much would it cost me?

Thanks guys!

The 2005 gauge stepper motors are cheaply made. I just had my coolant temp bind up on me. It was not the sensors, or bad ecu, but the actual little magnetic and nylon gears inside the stepper motor were binding.

There's a guy on ebay that sells new motors for $ 7.50 a piece. But, you have to be confident enough to tackle that job. It involves de-soldering and soldering on and off the motors. He'll also fix it if you send him the entire set up for more $ of course.

Do a search on ebay for "05 FORD MUSTANG STEPPER MOTOR CLUSTER"

My stealership wanted $90 to hook up and "diagnose." and then an additional $300 and some to send off the cluster to an authorized repair shop! REEEEEdiculous.

Your chugging issue could be many things? Sorry no help there.

I would also be interested in a solution. My speedometer seems to be about 5mph over. Could this be fixed with a tuner?

my fuel guage was messed up reading upside down!! crazy huh, but the gears were freak'd up on my cluster. i figured that it would be cheaper to replace the whole cluster. i bought a cluster off of Popeye on the "collective" for like $40. i got some white faced guages while i was at it too, just for the heck of it, since it was going to go into the car. the break down and install, took myb 30 minutes, but i had to leave for Iraq again a day or so after i installed it. i had my wife take the car to the dealership to put the correct mileage from my old cluster to the new one. idk how much that cost, but it couldnt be tht much

I have a 2007 GT with only 12K mi. Today my speedo stuck at 70. Later when I was doing somewhere around 30 it dropped to 45 and stayed there even when I sped up real fast and still when I came to a stop. After pulling over and shutting the car off then turning it back on again it seemed ok the rest of the drive.

This is my first problem with the speedo but just one more in the long string of design/engineering flaws and poor quality parts I have experienced in this car.

Does anyone know if there is a TSB on this issue with the speedo malfunctioning? I figured a TSB might help convince the dealer there is a problem because its such a hassle to get anything done under the warranty even when its an obvious.

My dealers said there isn't a TSB. I've heard of a lot of problems with the cheap stepper motors that ford went with. The internet guy uses a new, updated version w/ a different part #.

I would not rule out the wet SJB problem as well.....
Passengers side carpet wet after raining like so
many forum members with the dreaded 'water leak'.

The eBay seller only shows it to be for the 2005 Mustang.
Maybe he means 2005 and up?

This guy will update and replace the older version, prone to dying,
stepper motors in the whole cluster for $140....
