Shop tune vs. bamatune
hi guys
im pretty new here and have just started modding my 2008 v6. im getting duals put on and the next thing im planning is a CAI and a tune. i've been reading alot on here about bamachip tunes and how they are really good. but i was wondering whether the guys at my local shop can do just as good of a job as bamachips? im sure it depends on the shop experience but these guys do a lot of work around here and seem pretty experienced.
thanks!

Bama is pretty much the industry leader for getting our CAI tunes. They focus on our weakest points, top end and mid range torque. SO with Bama you get a better torque curve and a better top end. It's not just a one strong point thing. They tune for better shiftspoints in automatics, firmer transmissions for launching, more torque low, mid, and high. more horsepower, and better efficiency. I have never heard anyone not like or feel the difference in their Bamatune, furthermore I've seen them recommended more than any other company.
All that really matters is which CAI you do. Bama does not write tunes for all makes of CAI. Stick to JLT or C&L and they have excellent tunes. They do not however make tunes for my DeMolet Tunable Inductions CAI but I've heard rumors that John DeMolet wrote his tunes using Bamas dyno?

My first run on the Dyno with Doug's tune (BAMA) netted 265-268 rwhp and my dyno tune I went up to 271 rwhp and 288 rwtq. BAMA and Doug are very reliable and the numbers show that Doug's tunes are pretty much right on.

I compared his 87 tune to Brent's for my new DeMolet TI CAI just yesterday. They are very close in torque curve but Brenspeed's is slightly more aggressive (3-5HP).
The performance curve is more consistent above 4K rpm's than the C&L CAI i had.

Also depends if the 'shop' knows HOW to tune your car. There's subtle differences that only knowledge and experience can resolve. Practically anyone can 'tune' your car; but to do it so it performs the best without rising engine damage, that's a little more challenging.
But a tune specific for your car is the best, as each car will have it's own peculiarities that a custom tune can properly be set up for.
