Default Strange Gas Fill up issue

When I fill my 2005 GT up with gas, the pump actually shuts off numerous times during the fill as it would if it were full, but its not. It generally always will shut off around 13 gallons when I know that I have a 16 gallon tank. Its like the gas hits something and bounces back up and triggers the pump off. Any ideas as to what could cause this?

There is a TSB out for this. Search on here for the TSB number. It requires the replacement of the fuel filler neck. My 06 escape had this issue and my 09 stang does this from time to time.

BTW, not that it matters but you did post in the 4.0 v6 forum.

Sorry about the mispost. I cannot find anywhere where someone was successful in getting ford to fix it?? They all have been denied? Any help with finding it? Thanks.

There are actually MULTIPLE TSB's on this. Some of those that had it fixed under warranty per the TSB claim that it didn't help. The search feature would have found many, many, many, many, many. many, many..... threads on this topic.

There are a few work arounds. Try these in various combinations when you encounter a pump that gives you problems (not all pumps will):
  • Start the pump flow rate as slow as possible, then increase to find the kick-off point. Some pumps are more sensitive than others.
  • Rotate the pump handle by as much as 180 degrees. 45 degrees usually works for me along with the slower rate.
  • Start the flow of fuel with the pump handle neck partially inserted into the filler tube (this one is my last stab).

Great, thanks. I guess I will just try the nozzle trick rather than dealing with Ford. Its a minor inconvenience but very livable. Thanks again.

This is pretty common and can be very annoying! The severity of the problem varies depending on the station, but the best fix I've found is rotating the handle 180 degrees like mentioned above. Can make you look pretty silly but it's better than standing there for 20 minutes trying to pump gas.

I filled up today and tried tilting the nozzle sideways and it seemed to work fine. I can still fit about 1.5-2 more gallons in there after it clicks off.

My car does this too. It was not so bad when I could pump my own gas, but now I am in this hippie state (Oregon) that has made it against the law to pump your gas. WTF?!?! So ONE attendant will go around to all the cars, and it takes forever to explain to him to slow down (he doesn't) and then wait for him to come back around and restart my pump only to have it kick off again. Looks like I will be calling Ford.

I miss pumping my own gas

Sad to say, that is no joke. It is against the law to pump your own gas. When I first got here, I didnt know that and got out and started to, the attendant came running like I was about to light the place on fire. He said if I do and they get caught, the station gets a $1500 fine and I get up to a $500 fine. Not sure if he was exaggerating the amounts, but they do fine you. Sucks so bad.

I dont tip them though, no way!!
