I got the tuner long before I got the CAI.
The tuner made a big difference. I love the 91 Torque tune.
The CAI, well, not so much. It looks cool, makes a neat sucking noise and made my exhaust tone a little deeper.

The tuner simply loads the custom tunes, stores the stock tune and allows you to change a FEW parameters. The custom tunes (written by the likes of Brenspeed, Bama, VMP, Tillman and others) that you buy are what you need to be MORE concerned with; NOT the handheld.
The SCT Xcal2 and Xcal3 plus the Diablo Predator are the more popular tuners and are very good. But if you intend to go FI, you'll need the tuner that the shop uses.

I myself have the AFE intake. As far as sound goes, I think it sounds really good when pushing the throttle. At a stand still, it sounds alright when revving it. The filter itself is pretty big though. I have the Diablo Sport Tune installed and has made a big difference. If you want, I can put up some pics. I'll have to put up a video, but only have a camera phone, so don't know how the video quality will be.

Read through some forum threads and read some company websites. You can learn a lot about the individual tunes, tuners, and CAIs.
Websites like Bama and Brenspeed explain things about thier tunes. Then you can figure out what you want a tune for. Example: low end torque, high end hp, or an overall racing tune. There are different types of tunes depending upon how you want your car to perform, as well as tuning for different octane fuels. If you want more hp for short stop light to stop light races then you get an appropriate tune for that.
The nice part is the tuners will hold multiple tunes so you can usually get three tunes and change back and forth at your leisure.
The search feature here is great, but people still log on to help out with questions.
