i would imagine its just your imagination, i dont see them being big enough to be interfere with your wind resistance, i could be wrong, but other things like my hood i would imagine would be way worse then mudflaps.

How many dozen fill-ups are you basing that on? If it's less than 6-12, wait until you get some meaningful data to average. From years of experience, there are many, many EXTERNAL factors that can make a 4 MPG difference despite driving the exact same route using gas from the same stations and driving the same speeds. Then there are the influences from the car, the driver...

Resistance from mudflaps might possibly drop your fuel mileage a tenth of a percent or 2 IF you're driving at speeds in excess of 60-70 MPH where drag begins to come into play (but I truly doubt it).

BTW, post some pics of these mudflaps. I hope they don't have Yosemite Sam on the back...

Could be the added weight, go with a set of light weight mud flaps and your mileage should improve.

I hope the op has a good sense of humor, this could be a long thread...

If you get a hydralic pulley system set up, you can crank a level and get them to extend or lie flat on the car for a sweet air brake setup! Kinda like the Bugatti has....
