Car Dying intermittently
HELP!!! I swear if I don't get this figured out I'm going to end up in a bad accident. My car keeps cutting off at random times. I have an '05 V6 My gut is that it is a fuel pump issue, but I don't want to automatically assume that.
Sometimes when I'm sitting at a redlight (or occassionally while driving down the road), the car will begin to idle rough and I can almost guarantee that it will die next time I'm sitting idle at a light or stop sign. In order to start it, I have to press the gas while turning the ignition to get it to start.
Tonight on the way home down busy I-35, when I slowed behind a car in front of me, my car completely died again! I have no problem getting it to start up right away, as long as I'm pressing the gas while starting it.
It does have the service engine light on (and has for months now) and I have had the codes checked, but autozone simply tells me the codes have something to do with the fuel system. I did take it to a mechanic who swears there is nothing wrong with my car, but it may be a bad sensor. I have also fairly recently changed my fuel filter (which had black gunk pouring out of it when it was removed).
Any ideas would be greatly appreciate it. I just don't want to pay the dealership $750 to replace the fuel pump if that isn't the issue. Thanks!

Sounds very similar to what I experienced with my Explorer sport. I drove back from a long road trip and the next morning the Explorer kept wanting to stall out, especially while sitting at a red light or stop sign. I had to keep pressing my foot on the gas pedal to keep it from stalling out. I took it to a mechanic, and barely made it there. They had to change out the fuel pump, fuel filter and clean out the fuel lines with cleaner. Good luck!
