removing California emissions
My wife has a 2006 with a V6, it was a California car. Trying to fix this up for her some, I know the cal emissions are never good for power or mileage. Want to start cleaning it out, any suggestions on where to start? I have an old school, carborated brain, not sure what to do with all this electronic crap, lol.

I don't know what emission devices for a Cali car are different or in addition to a non-Cali car so hopefully someone here can help you. All I can say is that I hope those Cali emission items aren't tied to some PCM monitoring devices since that would likely complicate things. I'm also an old school carb/points/condenser guy and despise the lack of "rip out and replace" like we had years ago.
Welcome to the forum, too. Where abouts in KY are you? I lived in Paducah for 2 years from 2007-2009 working on a D.O.E. project.

As I understood, Cali emissions standards are higher, I know vehicles intended for sale in Cali have different emission specs. Just trying to start on HP performance, figured that should be where I start. I am in liberty, about smack dab in the middle of the state.

all i did was install a BamaChips 91 tune with a simple electronic programmer tool. that pretty much wiped out all the CA emision settings. just make sure you switch back to OEM settings before smog test.

I Don't believe there are any differences in the 05-09 models. My 00 v6 did have cali and fed emissions. The difference was the number of catalytic converteres. The Cali models for 99 to 04 had 4 cats (2 precats, 2 cats) whereas the federal models had just the cats.
Easiest way to tell if there is a difference is to go to a parts lookup website and look up exhaust or emissions parts for your 2006. If there are differences you will see descriptions that include 'Federal Emission only' or California Emissions only'.

As far as adding HP, I would recommend a CAI and SCT tuner and custom tunes from either Brenspeed or American Muscle. They are both very reputable companies. I have an Airaid CAI and SCT Xcal tuner with 3 custom tunes from Brenspeed. I requested emmissions friendly tunes, due to residing in GA and haven't experienced any issues passing emissions. The CAI/custom tune really wakes up the car!
