Question Tranny/Engine chirp/screech after Bama Tune

Hey guys,

I just received my Bama Tunes from AM the other day and loaded them into my SF3/X3 tuner. First i put the 91 street tune in my car and whoa what a difference from using the presets that came with the tuner!

Here's my question. When I have her at WOT and my car shifts from 2nd to 3rd I hear a loud chirp/screeching sound come from the front of my car and am wondering if this is a cause for concern or whether it's something normal when using custom tunes or if I have something worse in the making. I know that with the more aggressive shift points she's gonna shift a little more "jerky" but I'm worried that this might be a sign that there are internal components in my AT that are being overworked or are on their way out. Or maybe my serpentine belt is momentarily slipping(thats almost what it sounds like) even though I replaced it last November and only have 5K on it since? Let me know what your guy's experience is when using custom tunes as I know many of you do and whether you guys think its normal or not.

Did you drive the car as hard stock as you do now with the tunes? Try reloading the stock tune and pushing her as hard. The tunes themselves shoudn't cause that type of noise. It's either something mechanical that was there before or could be that the added power is adding some additional twist/motion that wasn't there before.

Thats what I was afraid of. When she was stock I used to push her just as hard and when it shifted from 2nd to 3rd at WOT it would roll smoothly into gear. Even with the stock presets on the tuner it never shifted like this. I know that the firmer and more aggressive shift points that BAMA creates are going to be harder on my tranny overall but it sucks that as soon as I put the tunes on her she starts making the 2nd to 3rd screech. When she shifts from 1st to 2nd she chirps the tires nicely but from 2nd to 3rd its definitely coming from my engine or tranny, I just wish I knew for sure what it was cause now I'm worried that the tunes are too much for her and if it's gonna break something. At $150 it kinda sucks if I cant use the tunes for fear of blowing my tranny or what not.

The chirp is real quick at the end of the video...in your opinion should I or shouldn't i keep using the tunes?

i have the diablo predator tuner and when i run the modified firm shifting tune ( basically an extra firm shift) on my automatic i get the same issue. if i hammer it ill get that screech on my 08 v6. its the serpentine belt im sure. havent had any issues as far as anything breaking. but i only run that particular tune when i know i will need that extra firm shift

Just watched the video and mine does the exact same noise, its the serpentine belt, i wouldnt be scared its just that quick shift is such a change in the revoultions of the pulleys the belt is slipping very briefly causing that screech on the pulleys. maybe put a bigger risk of breaking a old serpeentine belt but thats it, Just my opinion.

Thanks for the info bud! I feel a lot better now knowing that i'm not the only one and that you haven't had any issues. I'm gonna see if I can dial in the firmness on my tuner somehow in the meantime. Thanks again!

^This is correct. We've seen this before, with the added shift pressure the Serpentine belt can screech or make noises. We can definitely soften the shifts up a tiny bit so that doesn't happen anymore!

Give the Bama team a call and they'll get you squared away, very quickly! Our Bama Performance tuning specialists are here in the building Monday-Friday from 9AM-5:30PM EST and Saturday 9AM-5:30PM EST. You can hit them up directly at 888.226.9764 and they'll get you squared away!

For a V6, that sounds pretty good. Can other folks with the 4.0 and a MAC axleback say their's sounds as throaty?

It's 100% a belt screech. Nothing to worry about. Do you have a new/aftermarket alternator on it? My PA alternator makes the same noise except worse on the 2-3 and 3-4 shift.
