You'll make your time up on your 1/4 mile. If I had the $ for an FI system and I raced a stock GT and lost I'd think its worth it. I'd say if you layed out a sheet of paper with every mod to get you to 400rwhp its not worth it. But if you drive a stang, look for deals, meet new people and watch your HP increase as you mod, its worth the value.
It is a waste of time if you really want a 5.0.

My son put a s/c on my 2005. DEFINITELY worth it. Needed a tune to get the mixture just right and take off the speed limiter. Took it up to 140 one time, still pulling strong when throttled down. The drive shaft limitation didn't seem like much of a problem--without a racetrack, finding a safe place to drive that fast isn't easy.

Still, all that power and torque is great fun in any gear at any speed!

Not worth it if you have V8 envy. Otherwise it is a lot of fun having a fast V6.

Andrew, I haven't considered going FI on my 4.0 simply because of the money involved to do it right. Your probably looking at $4k after installation and you will definitely need to update other things (more $$).

I think a few nice mods that cost a helluva lot less will make your sixer really fun to drive:

- X pipe and cat back dual exhaust (10-15 HP)
- Tuner & CAI (20-30 HP)
- Long tube headers (optional but kick *** for top end power) 15-20 HP
- Ported heads (15-20 HP)
- Zex Nitrous 75 shot (safe leve for stock bottom end)

This will cost about $3k and the car will be beast! Probably upper 12's to low 13 second car running 340-350 HP.

You could have a ton of fun with this set up. Just my .02

Tom

Anyways, I originally wanted to get people's opinion on whether FI was a waste of time on a 4.0L. I'm not asking how to do it, rather for those who've done it/gone through the process of looking at it, if it was worth it in their eyes.

The portion about the speed limiter was a question that I didn't know the answer to. That was more around how the speedometer read over the 120MPH the stock gauge cluster has. I've sense researched and learned you can install a different cluster, it just needs to be re-calibrated. I am well aware I would need to probably upgrade my driveshaft and defeat the limiter with a tune.

So again, do you guys think it was worth it going FI, for the overall costs?
Who cars what the dash says? Lol., it does this...

It's all numbers really.
There are a few different ways of getting a car to go fast.
If you're not old school and not stuck on a V8, The 4.0 with the Vortech at 13lbs will be faster than the 4.6 with all its bolt ons.
At 16lbs, VMP tunning dynoed his at 398hp at the wheels. Not bad but it's a lot of boost, lol.
Now, you're looking at over $3000 for that supercharger kit but you have to upgrade your V6 differential to an 8.8 with its drive shaft (roughly $500 to $600 used) and the T5 manual tranny will be on burrowed time if you don't have an auto.
So add these numbers and match them up against the slightly slower GT with all the bolt ons and see if it's worth it for you.
FYI, the fastest 4.0s were in the 10s with Powerhouse turbos but I don't really know what kind of money it takes to get there. I'm assuming $15K to $20K...

Tom must be inhaling some of that nitrous... For the 4.0, reduce all of those HP gains (RWHP I assume) by 30% - 50%... except for the x-pipe and catback; make that maybe 2-3.

With the built motor plus the turbo kit and all that good stuff probably between $15,000-$20,000. How much it costs depends on how fast you want to go. I'd rather be unique with a fast V6 then a V8 though, people don't expect the V6 to be fast but they do expect the GT to be fast.

I dont think my numbers are off by 50% (but yes I was quoting flywheel hp). A 4.0 will see about 75% of the gains that a 2v 4.6 would gain with same mods.

That said I think its realistic to expect a car like that to be pushing near 300 hp at the wheels.
