Default Exhaust Too Loud? (Flowmaster American Thunder)

I recently had a shop put on Flowmaster's American Thunder Axelback on my car and I have a problem. Don't get me wrong, the exhaust sounds awesome and really livens my car. The down side is that it might actually be too loud, something I could never imagine. While I'm driving, everything's fine, but as soon as I get out of the car, I notice how my ears start to hurt. These are short drives too, nothing major. For the past 3 days this has been the case and it's about to drive me crazy. Is there anything I can do to make the interior not as loud? Get rid of drone? I've been recommended silencers but I don't think that's even close of a good route to take. Thanks!

I've heard of using dyno mat in the trunk but have never seen it done or been in a stang thats dyno matted with the same exhaust as mine to compare. It's kinda expensive stuff but might be worth a shot. Other than that I would say you might want to look into a different exhaust and sell yours on cragslist if it REALLY annoys you. I'm extremely happy with my MAC Axle-back, not trying to be a troll, just giving you my two cents . Good luck bud!

I would say dyno matt it, that might help. Ive never used it tho so im not sure how effective it is or how expensive it is.

Can you give an estimate of how much louder it was on the interior? I was perhaps going to look into buying one, but is it loud enough to drown out music at relatively low RPMs?

It made listening to music not as enjoyable since the exhaust was so loud.

Sounds like you have slightly sensitive ears, I have that problem too, hence it was one reason why I went with some GT takeoffs (that, and they are pretty cheap). I remember sitting in my buddy's 05 V6 with the dual pypes setup, and good god it droned like crazy! I would have a huge headache and my ears would have this "white noise" ring for a few minutes after we got out.

I suggest you sell that flowmaster, and grab a GT takeoff and put that on then see how you like the sound. There's no drone, but it is a LOT quieter than any aftermarket muffler. Youtube has some good vids. And if it's too quiet for you, then you could upgrade to a dual setup down the road (which sounds even better, still with no drone).

I sold the muffler to the exhaust shop who installed it. I once considered getting GT takeoffs but never got them. I'm now thinking of getting an exhaust tip. Here's an example

Honestly, for the price of that tip you could get some GT mufflers themselves. I got mine for around $70 shipped to my door (granted it was shipping included, and for both mufflers). You could shop around and maybe even get the single passenger side one even cheaper. Better sound, no drone, and price that can't be beat!

Just keep an eye out on the for sale section on this site, as well as ebay. They eventually turn up for very cheap.
