Rear Axle Whine, Anyone Else Have It???
Have a 2008 Mustang, V6, Automatic, which we bought used with about 24,000 miles and have noticed that the rear end gears will whine when I let off the gas. It does not do it while under load just when I let up on the accelerator at highway speeds. I see there is a TSB (TSB #09-20-4) which addresses "excessive axle whine noise" but don't know if this is the whine that I have or not. Anyone else have the whine?
I went to Ford where they drained the rear end to check for metal and put new fluid back in, said that if it becomes a problem it is documented and will be covered under warranty. The service manager did not mention this TSB and I would like to bring it to his attention but want to be sure I am talking about the problem in the TSB.

If it continues and falls under your warranty see if you can get them to add t-lok and different gears (3.73's) if you pay the difference. Couldn't hurt to ask. If they say yes you are better off then before.

+1. wondering that as well. If the rear end is indeed completely stock, then they should replace it under warranty: there should be no whine at all.
But if someone changed gears, it's likely a result of the gears.
When they pulled off the cover, they should have looked to see if stock gears and stock differential are in or if they were changed. You'd know then.

If you want to check on whether you will have a valid warranty claim, you can lift the rear end up and see if the driveshaft spins 3.31 times to 1 rotation of the tire and then see if just the passenger tire spins as well just to see if you still have the stock open differential
