Starter Solenoid Getting HOT!

Starter Solenoid Getting HOT!
We just rebuilt the engine but the starter doesn't even click. I noticed the solenoid was getting very hot and smelling. The starter remains cool. I changed the solenoid twice and used a new one last time. Still no click or spin and the solenoid is still getting VERY hot. You have to be careful not to burn your finger to the touch. That hasn't changed. When the starter is removed from the engine and the solenoid removed from the starter, the starter will spin on the bench when jumped. After 3 different solenoids, I am puzzled. Anybody have this problem, ever? The engine turns fine by hand.

I found the problem. I had the two large connectors on the solenoid reversed. Didn't realize it made a difference until I found one side was grounded out. That's the one I had on the hot side. No wonder it got hot.
