4.0 liter engine quit,s
We have a 2006 with a 4.0 v6 automatic transmission, it quit,s at random when slowing down no ck eng, light. One time I did notice the wrench symbol on the dash was on. It has no codes and other wise runs fine about 70'000 miles on it we have had the vehicle 1 year now. It happens after it has been driven for at least 20 minutes. Anyone have any idea,s I,m a heavy truck mechanic & not that familiar with auto,s

4.0 engine quit,s
Every time but once it will start up & run fine. One time it started & quit several times as we coasted into our driveway. I don,t think it,s an engine issue or it should have set a code. If I monitor engine functions everything looks normal except timing is bouncing about a 10. Degree span

My 2010 manual used to do something similar on rare occasion. I would clutch in come to a stop and rpms would drop right to the floor. IIRC mine was an exhaust leak on a cheap set of headers. It was also accompanied with a hunting idle.

There is a technical service bulletin for 05-06 fuel pumps.
TSB 06-09-09
This TSB is for vehicles stalling out after coming off a long highway drive.
Probably not your issue, but then again ..........
I know the tsb is for hesitation, but I seem to remember several posts about stalling out after a long drive and it ended up being the fuel pump. Good luck.

Here's a list of known issues (TSBs) https://lmr.com/products/2006-Mustang-TSB-Recall I don't see any matching your exact description but I agree with RLS, Fuel pump related ones sound the most legit 06-9-9. It could be that yours skipped the hesitation and went straight to failing/leaking.
