Harmonic Balancer separated, once I replaced it a loud tapping noise started
For some reason I didn't notice that my harmonic balancer had separated. The only reason I found this to be the problem is because the belt was loose, found the pulley sitting on my subframe. Once I replaced the harmonic balancer and started the car, there was a really loud tapping noise coming from the top of the motor. Sounds like a baseball card in bike spokes. I've had people tell me it could be a lifter or my timing chain but until this broke on my car, i didn't have much knowledge of the harmonic balancer. Could the separation cause catastrophic engine damage? I believe this has to be where the noise came from, but the noise only started once the repair was complete. Any suggestions?
