Rear caliper woes
Hey guys, this is probably covered somewhere here:
I'm trying to do a pad slap on my 2008 4.0 litre and I'm stuck on the poorly designed rear calipers. After finding out the pistons cannot be squeezed in but turned clockwise, I've run into trouble. I was able to turn one in on one side with channel locks taking care not to ruin the piston boot. The piston did turn in but has stalled out well short of goin in far enough to fit around the new pads. I haven't even tried the other side. If it's threaded why isn't it going in far enough?
What gives?? Does it need to be pushed in at the same time its turned? Frustrating as hell.

Mine pushed in just fine, no turning required....using the proper tool of course. Perhaps you have some corrosion limiting travel back into the caliper body? Reman assemblies aren't very expensive, just replace them if you can't get the pistons to press back in.

The front push in, but the rear is not the same. It has to be screwed in and as I recall you need some pressure on it at the same time. You probably aren't getting enough pressure with the channel locks. Get the tool from AutoZone or a place like that (free rental most places) and try it
