I know, you shouldn't mod a v6... but i already have a v8, so why not? Hey guys, i know its better to sell my V6 and buy a V8, but i really like my 2005 V6 convertible. It has proven to be very reliable. I noticed it was gradually losing power, so after 160,000 miles, last week i installed a demon coil, taylor wires and NGK plugs. Wow, she feels like a different car! So, I was thinking about a 8.8 rearend swap, with a modest gear change. This is my daily driver, so I don't want to kill my gas mileage.
Any suggestion on mods?

I’d highly recommend the 8.8 with lower gears! 3.73 gears are a great all around choice - that’s what I have and it made a big difference with torque multiplication. You’ll also want a tuner to adjust the speedo, along with the benefit of a performance tune.

Nothing wrong with modding a V6. Good call on the 8.8 swap. Are you also looking to do some bolt-ons? If so some easy ones are a CAI, cat-back exhaust, and a programmer.

For a CAI we would recommend a BBK or an Airaid.

For a cat-back exhaust, we would recommend a Dynomax WLK-39434, Pypes Violator PYE-SFM68 or Flowmaster Force II FLO-817510.

For a programmer, we would recommend the SCT X4 SCL-7015. This is a very popular programmer for Mustangs. It comes with standard pre-loaded tunes and has many standard features such as adjusting for axle ratio. It can also hold up to 10 custom tunes. You can follow this link and input your zip code to find a shop that can send you custom tunes.

From here you can get into long tube headers, camshafts, power-adders, etc.

Happy modding and good luck with your build.

Who says you shouldn't mod a V6? Plenty of us have done that.

For the 2005-10 make sure you upgrade to the 8.8" rear end as one of the first mods. It doesn't take much to break the 7.5" rear end.

I sure am glad I listened to all those that said not to mod a V6, But the 14" Brembo Front and and 13.8" GT500 rear brakes sure helped the brake fade over the stock setup.

Yep, it is kind of worthless to Mod a V6 Mustang, but then again the last time I was up on the Tail of the Dragon I proved it to be even more worthless to mod a Mustang GT or Charger RT since they both moved over so I could pass :icon_rally:
It is not the car, it is the perception given to the car through the years. I see so many Mustangs both V6 and GT's that will never get driven to the cars potential. Then you put a loose nut like myself behind the wheel and watch out :icon_twisted:

Thanks guys, this is all great information! I have already been looking for a 8.8. I believe the GT automatics have a better rear gear, than the 5 speeds. Eventually, i probably will upgrade to a better gear set

Not “better” if you mean a lower gear. The stock rear gear for 2005-2009 Mustang GT auto trans was 3.31. The stock rear gear in 2005 was 3.55 for GT manual trans. I think it was 2007 when Ford switched to 3.31 as stock for both auto and manual on the GT, with 3.55 being an optional upgrade.

I got the 3.73 gears before the X-Charger and really loved the change. It let me accelerate quickly on the interstate in O/D without having to downshift to 4th like before, including going uphill.
