If you read the GT owners manual it recommends those shift points for optimum fuel efficiency. I don't abide by them and get about 17 mpg. 17.73 to be exact on last fill up on city driving.

how would the v6 be worse on gas? OHV instead of OHC??

I have a 97 GT 5 speed. Right now it is still kinda cold out. I let it warm up about 10-15 mins before I drive usually, and I average 14/15mpg right now. When I bought it in the summer, I didn't need to run it that long on startup, so I got 18/19. The last highway trip I took I got about 25.

It is all about how much you let the car warm up, and yeah 3000 rpm shift is gonna suck gas. I shift at about 2000 rpm per gear. from 4th to 5th I wait until I'm going 45, seems to lug my engine too much to shift at 40.

i'm not sure why the 6ers are worse on gas. i've always just assumed it was something in the tune or something. but i've had a 6, my parents have a 6 and a gt, my uncle has a 6 and 2 gt's...all the V6's end up worse

I can bet you it is because of the style of engine. The v6s are the OHV engine, cam in block. These no matter what way you slice it, comapred to the OHC v8 get worse milage, but the cam in block engines are always good for low end torque.

The v8 have the ohc setup which has very smooth operation and everything is compacted a bit more so it's more efficient.

no problem. One thing, you notice how GM STILL USES the small block V8 with the cam in block? Despite the lesser fuel economy, they still generate excellent off the line torque, which is great for daily driving and hauling stuff in trucks.
