got a buncha work, need experts opinions
Hello all~
I have a 1997 GT with the 5 speed. 110000 miles on it, runs great. But with age comes some probs. I am planning on doing a clutch (resurfacing flywheel), synchros, rear main oil seal, oil pan gasket, and upgrading my H pipe.
I want to know FROM THE GUYS WHO'VE DONE IT THEMSELVES what would be the best order to do these in, and what is the best way to do them. Thank you very much!
I particularly need advice on the two gaskets I'm replacing.

Dont resurface, replace. For the amount to get a new flywheel, resurfacing just isnt worth it.
To replace the clutch you would need to pull the H-Pipe in order to get to the tranny, so its probably worth it to do your midpipe, clutch, flywheel, and synchros while the tranny is out and down.
As far as the gaskets, no clue. Not too sure off the top of my head the procedure to replace those.

all right. I've heard mostly good stories about resurfacing a flywheel. I have a reputable shop here that will do it for like $40. However the prices I find for new ones are $300??? I'm not made of money though...
Thanks for the info. I primarily need the advice on those gaskets, as to which to do first, and how to do them. I have read three different sets of directions for the oil pan from chilton, haynes and shopkey.

Well, your flywheel is slightly different from mine, so resurfacing wouldnt kill you.
For $40 its not a bad deal. Some shops kill you on that resurfacing, that is if the flywheel is able to be resurfaced.

yeah I know what you mean. by different... what kinda car do you drive??
I was going to have this machine shop tell me first if it can be machined and if it's fine go for it, if not I'll bite the bullet, but this car is not going to be an all out drag car I'm just doing some repairs and suttle upgrades

the only differance would be the 6 bolt to the 8 bolt. As far as the gasket replacement.....I really think its going to be a b1tch with the engine still in there. I did them with the engine out of the car but at the least I think your going to have to tilt the engine forward to get at the pan gasket(after the transmission is out). You will have to undo the motor mounts and tilt it forward.

okay thank you... that's what I was looking for. That sounds like it would be logical. I figure I will drop the pan, and then pull out that rear main seal housing, put in the new rear main and then the new oil pan gasket.
Now to tilt it, would I need to hook it up from the top and lift the rear of the engine forward?
