I'm not sure about the ticking sound in the motor, but as for the tranny noise, I noticed you've got a tri-ax. Most short shifters carry more transmission noise into the car than the stock unit because they don't have the rubber sound dampener. That might be causing you to hear more transmission noise.

reason i asked about the gas is my 98gt used to make a ticking sound on 87 octane, where as on 89 or 93 it was quiet. didnt make sense to me as to why, but with 89 or better it was quiet

That's exactly what it is......My car used to run like crap on 87 octane gas....I thought I had a lifter going bad or something.....It was ticking like a clock...But as soon as switched to a higher octane...(92) all that crap stopped....Now with the Tranny if he has high mileage...He might wanna consider checking the throw out bearing....That is if the noise stops or quiet's down when he touches the clutch.....

yes noise dtops when pressing the clutch but it does not sound like a throwout bearing, its coming from inside the tranny, but the tri-ax was installed about 3k miles ago, that may b the cause, and as far as the gas i have always ran 89 and always will. And its ticking at idle and throught the band so i dont think it can ping at idle...
