Swapping Trannies, looking for suggestions...
Hey Guys,
Since it's halfway through March, and I finally got my winter beater running right, I figured now would be a good time to swap trannies...
I got under the car, and started getting an idea, since I've never done a RWD tranny pull. It looks easier than a Transverse mounted one, but I noticed a few things, do you guys have any tips??
A) Dropping the exhaust: Looks like a PITA. How do I get the passenger side flange unbolted? Do I lift the tranny w/ the rear mount disconnected to gain access??
B) Top Bellhousing bolts: Those look like I will need to tip the tranny down to gain access, am I close??
C) W/ Torque converters, are they filled separately from the tranny?? I notice what looks like a drain plug on this bad boy, but I don't have a FSM, and most websites w/ tech info are garbage, or the links don't work..
D) Anyone wanna buy a AOD-E whose tailshaft housing most likely needs to be replaced, clutches may be a little bit worn, and the bands make some noise??
TIA
JT

RE: Swapping Trannies, looking for suggestions...
I've actually got the tranny already. It was built by a local shop that's done a bunch of these before. I've also got a B&M 2200 Stall Converter....
Next step is getting the aluminum driveshaft made...
Does anyone know if there are any vendors making these yet? I haven't seen them, and I just assume most people have them specifically made for their application.....
I've also got 2 Dedenbear Trans-Boxes: RPM Switch and Time Delay. Don't know if I'm going to use them, since I'm pretty sure they're for very high performance applications... I got them for free from a friend who wrecked his 99 GT...

I have had decent luck getting the top tranny bolts from above...under the hood. Unless I am mistaken they do have aluminum driveshafts out there. Rest of it is pretty straight forward. Make sure the torque converter is properly seated as you go back together.

Hey ddeaton66...
Thanks for the head's up about the top bellhousing bolts... Did you tilt the engine forward at all to reach them completely?? Just looked kinda tight to get in there....
The problem is, all of the aluminum Driveshafts are made for 5-spds... It may be just as cheap to have a driveshaft shop fab. one up, since it's shorter (to my knowledge). Thanks for the link though..

Yep, it is RUMORED that they DID make one for the autos, but production was cancelled after only a few hundred were made. So, one may be out there somewhere.

I think the chances of actually finding one are pretty slim though.. I never knew that someone actually started making them..
Did you have any idea why they stopped making them?? Was there just not a market for them??
