Default anyone mess with timing chains?

I"ve got a 96 mustang and in a month i'm gonna get the pi heads but take out the pi cam in them and put in comp cams small cam they make for the 4.6. the installation of everything doesnt seem to hard except i have no clue how the timing is set up on the 4.6 and i know its not good to mess it up. i've seen the 5.0 set up and its easy but i've heard the 4.6 is hard.....anyone ever try to put in new cams and also mess with the timing chains?

There are several tech write ups out there, but not on this website.

BTW i would not go with comp cams if I were you. i have heard of quailty issues with the comp cams And definatly not the smalest (isn't it like a 258 or 262 cam?) cam. If you do go with comp try to match the numbers to a VT stage 1, and you will not be upset.

Also know that you will need some cam gears, cause the stockers are press on, at least most years are.

Good luck, its a big job. I said screw it and had my local mustang shop do the work, was toooo scared of that OHC ****.

Pretty decent job....you gotta pull the valve covers, pulleys, idlers, etc...front timing cover.

yea i'll have to look at the VT stage 1, the small comp cam is the 262, i think i'll be alright with the cam gears cuz they didnt start the press on ones till 99 i think. yea i figure it will take a good week to get everything done and yea i'll have to agree with u that the OHC scares me too but i just dont wanna pay the money for someone to do it..i hate doing that. i'm gonna try to get my one mechanic though to check it all out once i'm done before i put everything back together

mind you guys you also have to drop the oil pan, because 2 bolts on that screw into the front cover. It's gay!!

Setting timing is not that difficult, it just takes patience. I have read there are a few special tools to install the chains on the 4.6s correctly. There should be a timing mark on the crank pulley shaft that you line up which indicates cylinder 1 is at TDC. Then you set up each cam gear the same, they should have marks as well. Then you put the chains on. Then rotate the engine by hand 2 or 4 full revolutions and make sure the marks line up again. If they do, all is well, if not, try again.

I haven't torn my heads off yet because I don't need to (if it ain't broke don't fix it) and i'm bi***ing with my tranny now. Freakin Ford, lol
