Coils rough RPMs and money and time
ok..
weeee the wondeful world of driveway mechanic
I bougth a new car to not deal with problems.....well just hit 75, k ...warranty is dead
Im having ruff idle..and ruff rpms througout acceleration
I have had this before...the ford dealership "said" it was a bad coil...well $200 dollars later its fixed..totla costs was 500$ but it was covered by warranty
It feels exactly the same....as if its abad coil
1) Im going to autozone...and get a free read out?
2) I have read many posts in here with a search of coil ignition...so im just checking to make sure all wires are snug
3) any other ideas i should be checking before i get my hands dirty...dammit my poor engien is a bit dirty
i will posts results

RE: Coils rough RPMs and money and time
Have autozone scan it, if it is a coil, you will get a code. If you don't have a code, Hurray, no coil to replace. Buy a set of plugs and 8 new boots (standard ignition, $24.) The boots arc out. Probably your problem in the first place, but the dealer wanted to sell a coil/boot assembly. This is the only known problem I have experienced with the coil on plug ignition, bad boots with miles on the vehicle. Whenever I tune one I always get the boots with the plugs.

ok
1)Autozone..says cant check engine if Check Engien Light not on
3) guy at Autozone said i could pull off the coils and bring them in to test?!! Or i can just use a voltage meter and test each one.
2) Ford Dealers says..sure we will keep ur car 1/2 a day and charge u Min of $`150 to see if coil is bad
3)what are the boots exactly? In the olden days or on my dirt bikes thats the cap that plugs into spark plug
Its not always running ruff..just most of the time..defnlty seems like bad sparking

ahh got it..seen a brand new one today
seemed like the boot was sold as 1 piece with coil though/ when the guy workn at autozone pulled boot off...seemd like he broke it..as he said.."oh wont sell you this one"...and for about 10 minutes the guy was tryn to give me an octupus of spark plug cables..and i siad..no thats not it....he kept sayn..thats all this comptuer os telln me...; (
I am guessing it can be purchased seperatly?
The fuel arm thingy that runs over the top of the coils...simple to remove?
1 more ?...do coils ever work part of the time or is it generally go-no go
It would make more sense to me that there is a bad spark/ conecct somehwere like was said earlier bad boot

have you replaced all your plugs and wires recently? if not, i'd try that out and also make sure your maf isnt dirty. mine was running a little rought when i bought it so i did those 2 things and my car runs like a champ now.

you dont need to remove the fuel rail to get at the coil pack/plugs, you can just slide them right under. to get to plugs 2 and 3 you may need to diconnect the intake tube from the throttle body and the TPS harness so you can get a little more clearance for the ratchet

the 2001 does not have wires or coil-packs like your mustang or my 1996. The coils are near the plug. One for each cyl.
I don't know if the newer system increases efficiency but it may weigh less and can reduce missfire caused by old wires.
