87 Octane Gas Question

RE: 87 Octane Gas Question
No, do not just run 93 octane. That is a total waste of money unless you have tuned your car specifically for that octane rating. You probably just have some carbon build up in your engine that will actually heat up and glow red hot which contributes to predetonation, knocking. Just use one of the better fuel "system" cleaners the next time you fill up and your problems will be over. I use the Valvoline Synth Power Fuel "System" cleaner that is rated for up to 3,000 miles. I really does work well and I noticed an improvement at around 1/2 a tank. Techron is also excellent. Any system cleaner that is rated to dissolve carbon build up on valves, pistons, fuel injectors, etc. will work okay. Some are better than others though. Another very important item not to neglect in your fuel system is the fuel "filter". It should be changed no more than every 15,000 miles. Good luck.

Higher octane numbers are more resistant to detonating, that's all.Lower numbers don't burn faster, dirtier, cleaner,or slower than higher numbers.
If you want to run cheaper gas you can run 87 in a Mach 1 due to the fact that the four cam engine has a knock sensor. This marvel of technology retards the timing just enough to allow the use of 87 octane fuel. You will lose some HP due to the retarded timing.I ran 87 for years in my Lincoln MK VIII and had no ill effects.Fuel economy didn't change and the loss of HP wasn't noticeable either.I smoked a non-pi Mustang Gt twice.

i have a 2003 Mach 1 and i run with 93 octane and after reading everybodys comments and most saying just run with 93 octane i was wondering myself whats the difference between 87, 89 and 93 octane.. my guess is better combustion..?

RE: 87 Octane Gas Question
ok ill try that, but the pinging came before i had the tune and this prior to my offroad H pipe install. the car has 60,000 miles and I only put 10,000 on it so I dont know whats been change, but I do know that I never changed my fuel filter. Do you think that might explaing the jerking also? When i say jerking I mean that I can be going like 40 mph in 5th gear and I punch it and the car jerks instead of just accelerating. also what is seafoam and where can i get it?

Change your fuel filter you are probably starving the engine and causing pinging, running higher octance will only mask the problem and waste money.
