Default Why pay so much for exhaust? Something Comparable..

I notice so many posts on what exhaust to get for a GT. Here is an idea for the budget minded.. I took my GT to an exhaust shop and had them cut out my mufflers, and then put flanges back on the mufflers and existing pipe under the car. Then I cut 2 short pieces to fit where the mufflers were removed from (flanged those as well). Bolted the pipes back into the system and started it up. It sounded very deep and throaty, but it was just a hair too raspy for me. So I found two 6" turbo glass pack mufflers (no restrict just straight thru, but the inside of the glass packs had a swirl pattern) and dropped those into where my custom pipe was. Now I have herd the SLP loudmouth and other similar ones and I really prefer my setup. It sounds deep and throaty and it does not have that "red neck" crackle when you get on it or let off. I have also had quite a few comments on how good it sounds.

Turbo Glass pack: $25ea (from Checker Auto)
Flanges, welding, and a few feet of pipe: $50

Seems allot cheaper then allot of this cat-back stuff on the market and it sounds just as good if not better. Not to mention, since I used flanges on everything, I can easily switch between stock mufflers and the custom exhaust in only a few minutes.

For what its worth..

Sounds cool man, I'd love to hear what it sounds like. I'm not a fan of SLP either, I'd be very interrested to hear how yours turned out.

SLP is basically a refined glasspack (Loudmouth 1's that is)

So I fail to see where your comparison lies. I imagine it sounds about like a late 70's chevy pickup now. Anyways, you're still failing to see the full performance gain, especially if you plan to upgrade your entire exhaust (midpipe, headers, etc) b/c you're still running through those crappy 2 1/4" pipes.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, try Pypes (link ova deya ---&gt They make good quality mandrel bent kits with 2.5" tubing...good stuff. [sm=burnout.gif]

My point was you get a good sounding system for about $100 and free up some HP.

You dont really free up much more hp. The only thing you are doing is getting rid of the mufflers. Like acer said, you are still running 2 and 1/4 inch pipes.

Essentially if you upgrade any other part of your exhaust your going to create a bottleneck where the catback starts.

the midpipe and box exhaust maniflods are where most of the restriction is.

It might sound better (in your opinion) but I really doubt you gained any HP. The benifit to a real cat back is the increased diameter pipes and that the pipe is mandrel bent, which eliminates the kinks at the bends that cause a major restriction in flow.

You want the real wakeup, it's not your tailpipes that's the big restrictors, It's The cats!!!! The 2 1/4" exhaust might be an issue at 6500 rpm, they truly aren't the problem. There was a guy drag racing here using stock intake, stock cat back, 4.10's automatic, O/R X and he was running in the 12's. I swear, he had the video from the track 12.93, his best run. Code couldn't believe it!
