ticking noise

RE: ticking noise
I have the same problem with my 98 right now. I have been trying to figure it out for awhile now and not sure what it is. my car has what i thought was detonation when under hard throttle. I ran 93 octane in the car when it had the stock tune on it and i still had the sound. I put in a superchips tune that requires 93 and the sound is still the same hasnt changed any. i use 5w30 in the engine and allways make sure its full. I have used seafoam in the engine twice so far with no change. I had the car in at a meineke shop and had them check for an exhaust leak but they said they found nothing. I dont hear the noise when im just cruizing around its only when i romp on the gas and accelerate quickly. I guess im gonna try and have the plugs changed out and see what happens. Oh and mine seems to be originating from the passenger side of the engine. I have 77,200 miles on my engine as of now.

RE: ticking noise
Ya know, on some cars, (our Bullitt) for one, the EGR tube, which may not be leaking, can resonate that sound into the car interior. Me, and Ford, checked the car on the lift could find nothing. But, the sound was localized to the driver side firewall, that is where the EGR tube runs, across the bellhousing and down to LS header/manifold.

RE: ticking noise
wildazme you explained it perfectly. My car is the same way, when your cruising around you don't hear it but when you accelerate quickly (1/4 throttle or more) you hear it and at higher rpm it almost sounds like spark knock. I tried 93 octane and had the exhaust checked for leaks. The only thing different is that it sounds like it's coming from the driver side like 70 mach 1 said.
The dealer said it was alright but i'd just like to know what causes it. The problem is that the car doesn't make the sound when parked even if you rev it. So it's hard to pin point. Maybe it is coming from the EGR tube. Maybe it is an injector. If I try unplugging each injector one at a time and driving to see if that gets rid of it, can I get the engine light to go off afterwards by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes?

RE: ticking noise
ya my car is the same when the car is in park and you rev the engine you hear nothing at all. I dont think its the egr cause that would do it all the time. i dont think its injector noise because ive heard injectors before and this is to loud for that. im gonna try the spark plugs and see what happens. i hope whatever it is its not causing internal engine damage.

RE: ticking noise
danm i have the sme problem. it ticks under acceleration. i cant figure it out. it sooo anoying. it just started like 3 weeks ago. im going to look at my EGR tomorrow. i had to modify it so it would fit on the 5.4. so may be it has to do with that. but my car does it when i idel and rev it. buyt its really quiet.

RE: ticking noise
Remember, the EGR kicks in under hard acceleration and load, and it's right next to the firewall. My '04 so far is quiet, perhaps they went to a heavier tube, our '01 has done it since day 1.
