RE: Just Got A 96' Stang GT
i got a 96 too. had if for 5 months now, barely put 1k miles on it. first thing i did was a tune up. i changed the plugs, plug wires, air filter, fuel filter, cleaned IAC, pvc valve was already new and changed the oil to Mobil 1 synthetic.
other than that i have a MAC catback and a King Cobra clutch. my next mods are gonna be tires for the 18" y2k cobra r's that i already have, mgw shifter, o/r x pipe, black headlights, bassani midlength headers, udp's, comp cams cam and valve springs. and idk from there. o and gears and a dyno tune somewhere in the mix

I went with 3.73's in my '98 GT vert which was enough for me. I started at 3.08's so that was a fairly far jump. A '96 may even have a 2.73 in it rather than a 3.08. If you start out at 3.27's, then 3.73's may not seem as all that much change. You may have to check your revs to get a good idea of what rearend you actually have in the car. It may have been changed if you bought it with mods already. You can spin your drive shaft around with the rear wheels off the pavement and get a rough idea of what you have. For instance, one complete revolution of your drive shaft with 3.73 gears would turn your tires/wheels approximately 3 3/4 times around. Otherwise, check the driver's door jam for the spec plate and look for rearend. Mine said "Z" code which translated to a 3.08 ratio.
Get a catback and ditch the straight pipes as they are just cop magnets and no need to be asking for trouble. You can always buy the mufflers only and have them cut into the system. I'd also check the situation on the cats up front. I have what looks as 6 cats on my '98, maybe 4 cats and 2 res's. If you don't have at least 2 cats, you'll also have some problems with your computer and inspections. Larger throttle body and plenum are also good mods if it hasn't been done already.
If you are going to the trouble of changing all your fluids, I would definitely recommend something like Royal Purple synthetic fluids. Check out the Hot Rod TV test: http://www.royalpurple.com/video/video.html
I go Royal Purple in the crankcase, tranny and rearend. Good stuff!

Cool that you got a Stang. Gears first, relatively inexpensive for the bang for the buck and do 4.10's you will love them, in fact I and everyone else on this forum that has done that will pretty much agree you won't be disapointed, then do the PI swap. After that I would do the throttle body and so on, but def do the other 2 first, especially if your on a budget. Welcome to the club.

Ya I'm definetly gonna do gears first. My buddy has 4.10's on his 95' GT and I dont really like them. My other friend has 3.73's on his 98' GT and I seemed to like them better.
Ya all and all I'm in love with this car.....already had a first race with some ricer civic. I was amazed I really didnt get on it at all! lol
