Default 4.6 longevity

Hey Everyone...Just wanted to share what I thought was good news. I often see people ask how many miles we all have on our cars. I think its because we are worried how long they are going to last. Well a kid that lives in the apartment below me just brought home a 99GT that he picked up last night. THe car has 115k on it. The paint is perfect and even the interior looks brand new. He picked it up for 7 grand...I told him I thought it was a pretty good deal. It was owned by a woman but taken to the drag strip by her(not your typical woman) Car runs perfect, doesnt smoke at all. Transmission (5spd) still shifts perfect. THe car has line lock, 4.10 gears, K&N filter, cat back, and a stage 2 chip. The kid who bought it doesnt know much about him he said, and I told him I had never heard of a stage 2 chip. I thought we could only reprogram our computers, not get an actual chip. Anways the car pulls really hard....a lot harder than mine....definately makes me want to get gears. What I dont get though is in third gear he can hit just about 100 with his car....and my car with stock gears goes right to just before 100 before the limiter....shouldnt he hit red line before that with 4.10's????

you know if that car has a "chip" it may not have been re calibrated for the gears and it seems like 100 because the gauge says so

The 4.6 comes with steel head gaskets from the factory, also the pistons are ok, but the wrist pins are to small, my 97 run stronger than new. Milage isnt always a bad thing. Dont be afraid, shure the 4.6 has its weaknesses, but all and all it isnt as bad as some make it out to be. Mines fixin to get cams intake gears soon. Maybe even some boost. And a good cd player to listen to the new Godsmack CD

7 grand for 99 /w 115k? I got my 00 /w 45k for $7200 but it's been totaled at 600 miles. I don't care as long as it runs well, b/c I don't plan on selling it

good compression is 150psi +/- 5 psi on each cylinder. Technicaly what you are looking for is uniformity, you dont' want more than a 10% or so variance between cyliers otherwise you have problems. So in theory 120psi on all 8 would be ok

George

by the way I tested my engine to find 150 +/- a few psi all around

i hear the 4.6 is not a bad engine, my buddy has a 99GT with 98k miles on it and it runs strong as it did when new and he beats that poor thing to death. I got my 02' in the summer of 04' with 7k miles for 16,500 bucks (8.75 NYS tax incl) and its got 27k on it now and i have not had one single problem with the car, i blew out 2 fog light bulbs thats it. I am very pleased with the 4.6
