Tranny leaks from tail end, Please help...
Hello,
I have a 98 stang GT with a 5 speed. The other day I was driving, and I noticed smoke coming from under my car. I pulled over and looked under the car and saw white smoke coming from the tops of the cats, and I saw fluid all over the area around the tail of the tranny. So I drove home and jacked it up and looked at it and it appears that the tranny is leaking from the tail shaft seal and onto the cats. It only seems to be gettign worse. Someone told me that this was a common problem, but if it was wouldn't I have heard about it before. Can anyone help me????

Not sure what you want help with, but if I were you I would replace the tailshaft seal soon. If you don't, all that tranny fluid falling on the cats is a fire hazard!!

It in not hard to fix at all. Get a drip pan or cardboard pull the driveshaft. That is a 12 point 12mm or 13mm, so make sure you have it and make sure it is is neutral too. make sure that you mark the driveshaft in relation to the rear end just in case. Push the shaft into the trans to get it off the rear end then pull it straight out. Lay that aside. Get the hook type seal puller and yank the output seal before you pull the tail housing. Next pull the tailshaft housing (4 bolts). Unbolt and try to move, it probably wont want to go anywhere so get a deadblow hammer and hit it a few times to budge it. Dont use a regular hammer because you will crack it. You can get a gasket for the tailshaft housing but I just use black RTV. 20 foot lbs for the tail housing get a chunk of 2x4 to pound the new output seal back in even(make sure it is all the way back in). Stick the shaft back into the trans and line up the marks you made on the rear end and driveshaft. put the clamps back on the shaft tighten to about 25 foot lbs. All done. on the ground should take about an hour. in the air on a lift about 15 min. have fun!

I did forget to tell him to top off his fluid afterward. I hope he figured that much out. He shouldn't empty it unless it is time for a fluid change(30K).
