Default Strong coolant smell with A/C going...

I've got a 97GT with about 145k. Still have the original intake manifold but no serious problems with it yet, actually no leaks from that area at all. For some reason it smells stronger than ever before and in warm weather it is beginning to overheat until I get going and then the needle falls back down behind the "R" in the Normal range for temps.

Is there another type of pump the coolant flows through for the heater? I had a friend mention something about it last week

Like always, any help is greatly appreciated!!

If it's the heater core is it a job a novice can do or better left to the mechanic?

Sorry man. If it is, not good. Check the passenger side floor for a coolant leak. [&:][&:]

When my heater core went out, the smell would come out of the vents and it was also getting it all over my window and fogging it up...

About to head home from work, and I'll check it when I get home. If no coolant in the passenger floor board any other ideas?

What kind of cash for the heater core?

It costs me 463.78 total for my shop to change the heater core... The whole entire dash has to come off just to replace it, so most all of the charge was really just in labor...

Well, strong smell of coolant inside car usually is a sign of a bad heater core. Make sure you check your coolant level as well.

if you can get the book and read how a heater core can be exchanged is shouldn't cost you much. also there is a way that you can bypass it. you can bypass th heater core and still have the car work without wasting coolant, but your defrost wont work and neither will your heater. but you will save some money for now until you can figure out how to change it or save money for the shop to do it. the only reason it cost sooo much money is because you have to take sooo much stuff off.
