everybody knows the risk when they buy a used car. even if you did think you screwed up the car, it's legally not your responsibility, and in this case, it's not even your moral responsibility.

I wouldn't suggest giving him the finger and saying **k off. Thats how people get their houses burned down. It sounds to me like he's got a new mustang and is ready to do some modding, but doesn't have any money. If worst comes to worst...suggest to go in halfs with him?? Legally you're not responsible for anything, but if the right person were to get pissed it could get ugly.
