Default Auto tranny

Yes I do have an automatic, but its not that bad (to all you manual guys) LOL. Anyways, sometimes I like to shift it manually, but I'm not sure if it hurts the tranny and car or not. I usually only do it if I'm going fast and I bang it from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, because I do turn O/D off so it dont go into O/D. But I was wonderin would it hurt it if I put it in 1st at a stop light and took off normal and let off around 4000rpm's and let it drone in 1st back down to like 1500rpm's? I believe someone said it was bad for the car because of the pressure thats being put on it, but I'm not sure what they said. Thanks.

P.S. If someone doesnt understang than just ask, I'll try and explain it.

the way i see it is like this, if you're going down a steep *** hill and you're holding 1st @ 3000rpm do you think that will hurt your tranny? I don't think so, what seems more rough on it is the sudden let off from WOT, that tends to send a really bad shock trough the drive line....at least in a manual anyway.

I know the other day when I was holding 1st down a hill, it started to kinda smell funny, but I dont have a clue what it was. By sudden let off of WOT, you mean to start at like a light in first and run all the way up to 5500rpm WOT and then let off and let it drone back down to lower rpm's?

yes that what i mean, that sudden closure of the throttle really puts a lot of stress on everything when you're in 1st and turning that many revs. because when you let off like that you instantly stress the components in the opposite direction. so to avoid that initial "shock" try to just roll out of the throttle instead of snapping it shut like that.

a buddy of mine that had a 5sp '89 cherokee used to do burnouts all the time and used to abruptly close the throttle at redline instead of going to 2nd, well one day he did it and we heard a metallic "clink". Turns out he broke a tooth on the ring gear

the 4R70 tranny is programed to be able to shift manually, if your in second gear also you are only in second gear, it will not go into first or third, it will also firm up the shifts that way so you will be faster
